Hard to believe it’s over, but OryCon 37 has come and gone. We had an amazing time being the Music Guests of Honor this year; everyone treated us like the celebrities we pretend we are when we’re singing in the shower.
Even though we weren’t required to participate in panels as Guests of Honor, we all did. Jessica and Christian repeated their appearance at the Sea and Star Shanties 101 panel, where they helped the audience sing along with some great sailing and pub songs. Jessica also brought out “Red Shirt’s Prayer”, an early filk of ours.
Our liaison, Cori, was very helpful when it came time to check in and get to things – she even hooked us up with a merch table for after our GOH performance.
And speaking of the performance, what a time. Going Viral went on stage before us and heated things up to a boil with a set that included Choose Your Own Rockventure, a volunteer-guided story song. They are so much fun!
It was our goal to have an OryCon set that was 50% new material, and we busted past that mark, including two never-performed songs. “Nopetopus” is about our spirit animal, and “Our Time For Ennui” mashes up Lily Allen’s “Our Time” and The Doubleclicks’ “Ennui” into a conversation about going out vs staying in. We *think* they went ok. We also went full feelings and performed not only “The Story of Me” but also “Astronaut’s Hymn” (and Jessica totally did not cry, for the first time!).
It was also our first time being asked for an encore, so we brought out “The Zombie Song”, which was our first non-pirate song as a group. We got to meet so many new people and share our music and shirts and stickers… A thousand and one thanks to OryCon, to Cori, to the sound crew, to Going Viral, and to all the wonderful people we talked with this last weekend. You all make it worthwhile!
